That can't be real --can it?

The logic isn't there --what would the high canal be linking that wouldn't have a riverine approach already, naturally, at much nearer to the same sea level as the bridged river?

I think there are some bridges like that on a canal connecting Germany (Austria?) to the Danube. My memory is a bit vague on the specifics.
